It is right to say that no other pets will provide you as much convenience as the fish and other organisms in an aquarium will. There are some basic steps to caring for fish once the tank is established. There are some responsibilities you need to do everyday, while the best only requires minimal effort once a week. Note that there are not many things that you will have to do everyday for care of your fish tank. Look daily at your fish tank for any signs of stress of physical ill-health in your fish. Fish that are not too cheerful in the tank will fall ill often. Check out the filter and lights regularly and be sure they function at tip-top conditions. Do remember to feed them daily.
Feed the fish daily. Your fish must be able to consume the food you give them in 2 to 5 minutes. Excess food that is not consumed will sink to the bottom and become debris, adding to the nitrate levels and rising the toxicity of the water. Perform a pH test every week to see if the water pH level is still good. Make it a habit to make the necessary changes immediately. Ask the pet store where you got your fish from and they will tell you the exact pH for your fish. Not all species of fish require the same conditions.
Cleaning the filter is crucial. The waste materials that are produced in the tank due to excretion of the fish are collected in the filters. Without cleaning the filter repeatedly, they will not be able to remove the wastes because they will get clogged very soon. In addition to eliminating waste, a filter sometimes acts as an aeration device cycling oxygen through the tank. With bunged filters, you will not be able to have as good transmission of gases in your tank as you have with clean ones. This tampers with the oxygen supply in the aquarium. Without rectifying this problem as soon as possible, your fish are surely moving towards an untimely death. You have to assess the need of the aquarium and accordingly change the filter once every couple of weeks. An indication to clean your filter is when the water starts looking or smelling bad. There are two things you can do with your filter depending on its design " you will either have to clean it with water or you will have to change to a new one.
Water changing in the aquarium should not be done too quickly. See carefully if you have removed the lights and other arrangements from the fish tank before starting to clean it. Change approximately one third of the water in the aquarium every one to two weeks. You also have to see that the temperature of the water is inside 2 degrees plus or minus from the water temperature in the aquarium.Tap water, if added, will need to be treated and arranged at a temperature near two degrees of the fish tank. If you are confused what kind of water would do best for your fish, your local pet store owner can guide you. Sometimes, the tap water treatment is done in about an hour, while for others you will need to keep the water overnight.
Clean the sides of the tank with a scrubber to remove any built up algae. Be very particular you are not disturbing the fish when you are cleaning the tank. Move rocks and decorations to loosen any debris. When replacing the water, try to get this debris out using a small bucket or a vacuum siphon. An important part of cleaning is to remove the withered leaves from the aquarium plants. Clean the outside of the tank with a squeegee and clean tap water. Do not forget to clean the cover of the tank, from the inside and the outside. Your cleaning is done.
