Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes pain in your muscles, tendons and ligaments. If you suffer from fibromyalgia, you may suffer from fatigue and some body parts may become tender and sensitive, where even a slight pressure may cause searing pain. More women seem to suffer from this condition than men do.

Other names for this condition are chronic muscle pain syndrome, fibrositis, tension myalgias and psychogenic rheumatism.

Some of the well known symptoms are

Whole body pain: You can feel intense pain in most areas of your body when suffering with this condition. These include the back of your head, upper back and neck, chest, elbows, hips and knees. This happens more so, when you apply some pressure on these areas. If the condition is left untreated then stiffness can occur within a month.

Fatigue: People who suffer from this condition often wake up very tired in morning and are not fresh and active. This is even though they may have slept soundly and for a long time. Researches have indicated that a sleep disorder called Alpha Wave Interrupted Sleep Pattern afflicts patients .

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): Bloating, constipation and diarrhea can affect sufferers of this condition.

Headaches and facial pain: Some people have reported headaches and pain in facial muscles. This may also occur due to stiff neck and shoulders.

Increased sensitivity: If you suffer from Fibromyalgia, you may suffer from extreme sensitivity to odors, noises, bright lights and touch.

Few other common signs include

Difficulty in focusing on work Dizziness Depression and anxiety Dryness in the eyes and skin

Age, gender and irregular sleep patterns may affect your chances of suffering from fibromyalgia or its severity. A series of tests is needed for a correct diagnosis as there is no one single test that can detect this condition.

Muscle relaxants and anti analgesic, antidepressants are commonly prescribed for Fibromyalgia. Other means of treatment include cognitive behaviors therapy, lifestyle therapies etc. Sufferers are also helped by living a healthier lifestyle that includes regular exercise. You don't have to suffer forever if the condition is caught in time.
