For whatever reason, some people think of crate training puppies as cruel or inhumane. Nothing is further from the truth. When it's done right, crate training makes raising a happy, well-behaved dog so much easier.

Crate training has so many benefits to your and your new dog. It defines your dog's place in his new home - giving him a stronger feeling of security. He has his own special place or den. And it also helps you establish what is and isn't proper behavior inside your home.

Here are five simple tips to help you crate train your new puppy:

1. Never, ever use the crate to punish your dog.

Your dog's crate should always be a safe and happy place. He should like going there. It's where he can rest and relax. If he misbehaves, you should simply lead him calmly to his crate. Take a minute to talk to him so he knows you aren't mad or angry with him.

2. Make his crate a comfy, cozy place to be.

The crate should be a safe, relaxing place for your puppy. Don't put food and water inside. Instead, give him his favorite blanket to sleep on and a safe chew toy. Reward him whenever he goes inside with his favorite treat.

3. Don't make your puppy spend too much time in his crate.

All dogs are pack animals. They want to be with their pack -- and since you are your dog's pack, he wants nothing more than to spend time with you and your family. Never ask your puppy to sit locked away in his crate.

4. Always be consistent.

If you are using your crate to train your new puppy, consistency is vital. You can stop him from jumping on people by redirecting him - crating him each time he jumps on someone.

Don't forget - this isn't a punishment. Let family and guests visit your puppy while he's in his crate. Have them say hi and talk to him for a minute.

5. Create a schedule for crate training your dog.

Your puppy is naturally a light sleeper and, much like a child, needs extra rest. This faithful companion is usually "on guard" and ready to protect you if necessary. By scheduling regular naptimes during the day, your dog is able to really relax and get the sleep he needs in a safe environment.

Crate training is a great way to train your new puppy. It gives him his own little "kingdom" - and helps define your role as pack leader the first step in any successful dog training program.

Done right, crate training puppies isn't just humane it's a loving and compassionate way to train any dog. You're able to establish your role as pack leader and build a strong relationship with your new puppy. Even better, it eliminates much of the drama usually associated with dog ownership.
