Do you want to build your own home but are not sure how to go about it? This is a normal feeling, as most new home builders don't know what they are doing, and building a house can be challenging, especially if you don't plan everything carefully and causes you to run over budget.

When you are trying to build a home It's important that you decide every stage of how you go about it even before you initiate the building process. It is only when you plan well, that you will avoid spending more money than you want to on the home.

1. Before deciding on how to build your own home, plan it all out and write everything down. Plan the costs of each stage of the build, and you can get estimates from each contractor. Make sure someone draws out the house plans before you even start building. You will get a good idea of what the house will be like before It's built this way. When you use plans you can also make changes before you actually build. Visit home builder stores and price out items like flooring, bathroom fixtures, electric fixtures, appliances, etc.

2. Once you have done that, then you want to ask for the right materials from your contractor and have him quote his price using those materials that you have chosen.

3. Its so important that you plan as much of your house as possible before you start building. If you do decide to change something after construction has begun, then you need to know that there is an added charge, and you need to decide whether that added expense is worth it.

4. Note that if you plan on building a two story home, a large home, or a style that is more time consuming you will drive up the cost of the house. The shape and type of home you choose affects the amount of money you spend.

5. Make sure that above all you save that extra money for those unexpected costs. There are usually a few costs you can't control and these usually show up at either the beginning or the end of the construction.

If you have never built a home or thought about building your own house and don't know how a house is built then you may not realize that there are many things that factor in and that there are many different contractors that help in the building. There is a contractor that only works the foundation, one that does the framing, another that does the brick, another for the roof, and then there is a whole other set of contractors that work on plumbing, electricity, flooring etc.

These extra costs usually happen at either the beginning or the end stages of the construction process.

Most people that build a new home run into difficulties when they have to add things like cabinets, plumbing fixtures, flooring etc. This is where most people end up paying more than they thought they would, and why its important to start pricing items to build your own home before you start construction.
