If you want good looking trees in your garden they will need pruning regularly.

Your trees will reward you 1000% next season with stronger growth and an abundance of flowers and fruit.

One of the greatest causes where fruit trees only produce small fruit or very little blossom is the lack of pruning.

Pruning trees not only makes them grow stronger but also makes them safer by cutting away old branches that might fall and damage property or human life.

Required tools are gloves, knife, saw and secateurs.

Try and imagine how you would like the tree to look after is has been pruned and note the major branches that need removing.

The trees branches form the main shape branching out from the trunk which forms the structure. You will need to leave this central structure and shape the tree around this.

Branches that grow parallel to one another will need thinning by removing the weakest of these branches that cross over each other enabling the others to grow and develop, leaving only thoses branches that improve the overall shape of the tree.

Inward growing branches should be removed, as they will prevent air circulating in the centre of the tree and spoiling its shape.

Take a good look at the three and visualize the areas that look congested applying the guidelines mentioned earlier to thin the offending areas.

Tall trees may need reducing in height and can be cut down to the required level, removing the main leader first and then shaping the tree according to how you would like to look.

Trees prefer to be pruned during the winter as the sap has stopped flowing and the trees are in their dormant season having lost their leaves.

Winter is the best time of year to do prune trees when all the leaves have fallen off and the trees have gone into dormancy.

You should always cut away any dead or dying wood, this can be removed at any time of the year, although if you do it during the growing period you should always paint the cut ends.

You will need a container large enough to be able to dip the cutting blades of your pruning tools into a solution of household bleach, as the sap from the cuts can carry disease and this will be passed onto you healthy trees if you dont take precautions.

Most branches have a collar at the base of the branches, you should leave this, enabling the cut to heal over and prevent any disease getting in and killing the tree.

If you have trees that you rely on to provide shade during the summer, you can thin these out to maintain their shape, but be careful not to lower their height too much or you will reduce the shade you require.

Collecting all the old leaves and any fallen fruit during the winter, before you start pruning will help prevent the carry-over of disease from one season to the other, giving your trees and better start next year.
