Staying Stylish After Baby's Born

You are a mom with a new baby and the last thing on your mind is taking care of yourself. The baby's needs must be met first. Think again mom. You have to take care of you too.

Start with the rule of thumb that you must take a (quick) shower -- sometime before noon -- to get a fresh start every day. Resist the temptation to stay in the steam for a while so you have more time for your grooming and dress.

Makeup: It can take anywhere from two to twenty minutes to apply makeup. If all you have is two minutes to spare, that works, if you make smart choices in applying the makeup. For the quick application, use concealer to hide signs of sleep deprivation, a little blush to make your face glow, dark mascara to make your eyes look awake, and a touch of gloss on your lips to finish it all off.

Hair: Realistically, you may only have about 10 minutes to spruce yourself up, so it is wise to go very basic with your hair. With long hair instead of just putting your hair up in the famous pulled to the back ponytail, try something a little different. Wear that pony tail to the side or down low with some cute clips; or try wrapping a strand of hair around the base of the ponytail to hide the elastic. For shorter hair, apply a volumizer and finger comb your hair while you give your hair a quick blow dry. For more texture, use a little pomade at the tips.

Clothes: It is rare the mom whose figure comes back after a new baby. This is why you want to make sure to pick clothing that will make you look good. Steer clear of clothing that may split open. Just tell yourself that for right now, you cannot fit it. Encourage yourself that after two months of healthy eating and plenty of exercise you will be able to fit it without a problem. Remember that wearing what makes you look good, makes you feel good too. You can even consider wearing your maternity clothes so your body is at ease as it heals.

Shirts can be tricky, especially if you're nursing. Opt for tunic-length shirts that will feel flowing instead of hugging your new curves. If you're going for a button-down shirt, make sure there are no gaps between the buttons from the shirt pulling tight and being too small. Layering with a fitted camisole under your shirt can also help keep you covered.

When it comes to your pants, it is a smart choice to buy at least one pair of pants in your present size. For your pants that are a little snug at the waist, try the "rubber-band trick" by putting a rubber band through the buttonhole (be sure to wear a shirt long enough to cover well), or buy a "sleeve" that you can wear under a shirt that conceals your middle and the top of your un-buttoned pants. Drawstring pants are another option for now and even after the baby weight is gone

A nice flowing dress is also good to lift your spirits. Keep in mind that the dress should look good on and not fit too tight.

Accessories: Accessories are a must! The correct shoes and jewelry can do a lot for your outfit. Wear at least one piece of jewelry everyday. Heels are good if you are going out for the day because they make your legs look long and you appear slimmer.

A happy mommy is one who feels good about how they look. Take the time each day to take care of you. You don't have to look as tired as you may feel when you show your new addition off. BesidesDaddy will enjoy it too!
