While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl, who was probably his jailer's daughter, who often visited him during his prison confinement. It is believed that he wrote her a love letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in common use today.
Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France. From that popular tradition it was easy for merchants to seize upon the "a Valentine for lovers" theme and suggest that giving gifts, if only a card, was the right thing to do. Before long there was even a special day, February 14, set aside for the custom.
