You see them most days - in shopping centers, offices, and chances are there are a few in your home. So familiar, they seem like a modern invention but actually, they aren't modern at all. It all began in Central Asia in the 3rd millennium BC, moved to Spain in the 10th century, and finally made its way to the rest of Europe during the 18th century. To what am I referring? None other than the humble carpet, or rug as some may call it.

A carpet is nothing more than a floor covering which is made by weaving any of a number of materials. Some of these materials include textiles, wool, and even natural materials including sisal. In order to produce a rug, the same materials are used, although instead of weaving, they are made by braiding or hooking, among other techniques.

Area rugs are the most common type of rug that you'll probably see around. These rugs are normally machine-made, and as a result are able to have very colorful designs printed on them. Due to the nature of their production, they are commonly available in several sizes, and are normally not custom-made for your home.

There are some carpet varieties which are meant for external use and they are commonly called outdoor rugs. They are made from long lasting material to withstand the conditions outside. They should be replaced every few of years depending on the wear and tear.

Runners are thin long pieces of carpet which are wonderful for a hallway, or narrow areas, and are sometimes used for decorating tables or shelves. Usually they are very colorful and their designs reflect the region in which they were manufactured.

If you're looking for carpet for stairs you have 2 choices. There is that which can be cut from a roll or a runner described above. These are normally made of softer material than other carpets. Nevertheless, contempoary versions are built to last, as they typically undergo much wear and friction from our walking over them.

Wall-to-wall carpet is designed to cover the entire floor permanently and is usually referred to as fitted carpet. The material of this carpet is often thick and soft, providing extra comfort and allowing some soundproofing benefits to its users. A downside is the thick material attracts dirt and mites and it becomes a bit difficult to clean.

For people who want something different in their home they could go for oriental rugs which are made in places like China, Vietnam, Turkey and Iran. Authentic oriental rugs are made by hand knotting or hand weaving.

Being as there are so many different types of carpets, there is sure to be one that will meet your needs and desires.
